CUPPING (NO NEEDLE TREATMENT)
Cupping is like a deep tissue massage. The practitioner applies heat in a cup then applies that cup to the body. The heat creates a vacuum effect and draws the skin up into the cup. The result is a movement of fresh blood and oxygen to the surrounding area which releases toxins, increases drainage of toxins through the lymphatic system, relaxes tight muscles, and reduces inflammation.
Cupping therapy has been part of Chinese medicine for over 2,500 years. It is most often used for aches and pains including low back and sciatica, neck and shoulder tension, and fibromyalgia. It also helps open up the chest and benefits the lungs to treat respiratory problems rom common colds, bronchitis, and even asthma. It can also improve digestive ailments including stomach aches, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. Cupping does leave noticeable marks similar to a bruise or hickey which are sometimes referred to as “cup kisses." The cup marks can look alarming, however, they are not painful and will resolve over time within 3-7 days.
TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE (TCM)
Traditional Chinese Medical practitioners use a holistic and functional approach to health care. This means assessing the patient's overall condition, including mental, emotional, physical and spiritual wellness. The human body innately functions best when certain conditions are met in its external and internal environments. By using Traditional Chinese Medicine techniques such as acupuncture, cupping, herbal therapy and other treatments, balance can be restored for optimum health and well-being.
TUI NA THERAPY (NO NEEDLE TREATMENT)
Tui na is a form of Chinese manipulative therapy that uses Chinese taoist and martial art principles to bring the body to balance. The practitioner may brush, knead, roll, press, and rub the areas between each of the joints (known as the eight gates) to open the body’s defensive (wei) chi and get energy moving in the muscles and meridians. The practitioner may then use range of motion, traction, and/or massage, with the stimulation of acupressure points. Tui na is said to treat acute and chronic conditions, including both musculoskeletal and non-musculoskeletal conditions.
MOXIBUSTION (NO NEEDLE TREATMENT)
Moxibustion evolved thousands of years ago in early northern China around the same time as acupuncture. Moxibustion involves the burning of moxa over specific acupuncture points or large areas of the body. Moxa is an herbal wool made from the leaves of the Mugwort plant, which is often formed into small cones and placed on the tip of a needle or rolled into a cigar-like shaped stick. The heat produced by moxibustion penetrates deeply into the body to restore balance, promote circulation, and reduce pain. This form of treatment is usually combined with acupuncture, and is useful for improving general health and treating chronic conditions such as arthritis, digestive disorders, pain, infertility, and more. Smokeless moxa is recommended for people with asthma or respiratory problems as it can produce potent smoke.
ACUPUNCTURE THERAPY
Acupuncture is the gentle insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body. This process stimulates movement of energy within the body, allowing natural healing to take place. Acupuncture helps to prevent illness and decrease pain, supplementing the immune and organ systems to improve the overall functioning of the body. When the needles are inserted at specific points they send signals to the brain to help start the body's natural healing process. Acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and has been used for countless ailments, including musculoskeletal, digestive, neurological, hormonal, gynecological, emotional, respiratory, pain, and weight management.
AURICULAR (EAR) ACUPUNCTURE
There are over 200 acupoints on each ear that represent the anatomical parts and functions of the human body. When we stimulate these points we access the central nervous system through the cranial nerves on the auricle of the ear. This sends a direct message to the brain that results in a healing response.
Auricular acupuncture involves the stimulation of these points with tiny seeds or needles. The tiny seeds are painless, and do not pierce the skin. The patient will keep the ear seeds on for 7-10 days and re-stimulate the points by massaging the ear several times through the day. Ear seeds are most often used for addiction, smoking cessation, and weight loss.
E-STIM/ELECTROACUPUNCTURE
Electroacupuncture or e-stim is a form of acupuncture where small electric currents are passed between pairs of acupuncture needles. As with
traditional acupuncture, needles are inserted on specific points along the body however, in electroacupuncture these points are attached to a device that generates continuous electric pulses using small clips. Frequency and intensity of the pulses are adjusted according to the condition being treated. Several pairs of needles can be stimulated at the same time for no more than 30 minutes.
According to the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, disease is caused when chi/energy does not flow properly in the body. Acupuncturists determine whether chi/energy is deficient, stagnant or simply out of balance, which indicates the points to be stimulated. Electroacupuncture is considered to be especially useful for conditions in which there is blood stagnation, such as in chronic pain syndromes.
ACUPRESSURE (NO NEEDLE TREATMENT)
Acupressure involves the non-invasive stimulation of acupuncture points with finger pressure instead of needles. Because acupressure stimulates the body’s natural self-healing abilities, it can also work as great preventative therapy. Generally, the effects of acupressure are not as intense as acupuncture, and therefore more treatments are needed for optimum results.
Acupressure is ideal for any age, including children and the elderly. It is gentle, safe, and effective for many conditions such as relief or prevention of cold/flu, arthritis, mobility problems, constipation, and poor circulation. Because certain points must be avoided during pregnancy, it is important to tell your practitioner if you are or may become pregnant.
