Acupuncture for Weight Loss

Marlo Rapp

The beginning of a new year tends to be a time of reflection on our goals, and the status of our lives. This plus the tendency to gain weight over the holidays has many assessing their health and weight. Weight loss is one of the most popular goals, especially come New Year’s resolution time. It impacts so many aspects of our daily life, from our confidence and energy levels to our health and functioning.

Unfortunately despite our best intentions, most people get off track with their weight loss goals within a few weeks or months of setting their goal. Lack of motivation, knowledge and support all contribute to this, so can the difficulty that comes with trying to lose weight. Hormone imbalances, food cravings, stress, low metabolism and other health issues can be major obstacles for people trying to lose weight.

The good news: acupuncture can help.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese modality involving the stimulation of specific points on the body through the insertion of tiny, thin needles. Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years, and research and user reports alike have touted a multitude of benefits, including pain management, weight loss, support, migraines and headaches, improved digestion, increased energy, boosted mood, and more.

How Can Acupuncture Help Me With My Weight Loss Goals?

Traditional Chinese Medicine views excessive weight gain as being caused by an imbalance related to the liver and spleen organ systems. Acupuncture seeks to address these imbalances, targeting the liver and spleen as well as the endocrine system, kidneys, thyroid, and other body systems. Mood, stress, and emotional balance are also important, particularly with regards to their roles in appetite and satiation, and hormone balance.

There are many potential ways that acupuncture may help support you on your weight loss journey, including:

  • Acupuncture may reduce appetite & cravings

  • Acupuncture may increase metabolism

  • Acupuncture can boost energy and mood

  • Acupuncture may affect your hormones

  • Acupuncture promotes healthy digestion

  • Acupuncture can relieve stress

  • Acupuncture can lead to better sleep

  • Acupuncture may help with depression and anxiety

  • Acupuncture may decrease stress-induced spikes in cortisol, which is associated with belly fat

In particular, auricular acupuncture, or “ear” acupuncture, has shown great promise with supporting weight loss. In a study examining a combination of diet and exercise versus diet, exercise, and ear acupuncture, the group that received ear acupuncture lost an average of 10 lbs, where the group without lost only an average of 3 lbs. In the study, the participants who received ear acupuncture reported decreased appetite compared to the other group.
