These are just some of the ways that an under-active thyroid gland, known as Hypothyroidism, can negatively impact your health and well-being. The thyroid is a tiny, butterfly-shaped gland that is involved in influencing nearly every organ system in the body.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), hypothyroidism is regarded as a Yin/Yang imbalance, and is addressed through acupuncture, herbal medicine, and nutritional counseling.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of tiny, thin needles at specific location of the body, known as acupuncture points. It has been found that acupuncture effects the body’s systems and functions, including the endocrine system, the immune system, neurotransmitters, blood flow, stress, pain, infertility, the gastrointestinal tract, asthma, migraines - and thyroid hormones and functioning.

The World Health Organization advocates acupuncture for the treatment of thyroid diseases. This is further backed up by preliminary clinical research; one year long study found that people treated with acupuncture had significant improvements in clinical symptoms of hypothyroidism. Another study noted the role of acupuncture in normalizing hypothyroidism-induced thyroid hormone imbalance and regulating the T helper Th1/Th2 imbalance, as well as stimulating the body’s antioxidant defense system. Additional research cited increased levels of thyroid hormones in people suffering from hypothyroidism, as well as reduced sensitivity to pain and stress, reduced inflammation, and increased blood circulation.

Traditional Chinese Medicine views the body as a whole when addressing disease, and also considers a person’s lifetime exposure to stress, trauma, and toxins, as well as whole body function. It further recognizes each person as unique and requiring a custom approach to address areas of concern. This may include acupuncture, supplements, and/or nutritional recommendations to fully support your body coming into proper balance.
