ABCs of Managing Stress this Holiday Season

Marlo Rapp

The holiday season has begun! There is so much to enjoy about this time of year, from decorations and picking out special gifts for friends and family, to holiday parties, baking, movies, and traditions. That said, with so much to do, this time of year can also prove to be quite stressful. Add in the overindulgence that is characteristic of the holidays, and it can be enough to push anyone over the edge. Now more than ever we need to make self-care a priority — with stress management at the top of the list.

Read on to learn the ABCs of stress management — our top 7 tips to help you take care of yourself through the holidays!

Acupuncture - Acupuncture promotes balance in the nervous system, and has been shown to help people struggling with anxiety, stress, insomnia, depression, and fatigue. Furthermore, research has found that acupuncture impacts brain and neuronal activity such that the limbic system actually shuts down stress regions in the brain. Contact us now to schedule a Winter Park acupuncture session to help manage your stress.

B12 Injections - We tend to need more B12 as we age, and being deficient can cause many issues, including cognitive and mood issues, extreme fatigue, headaches, decreased appetite, anemia, dizziness, and/or muscle weakness. B12 injections have been found to be absorbed better than pill form. Potential benefits of B12 injections include reduced stress and increased energy, as well as improvements in memory, focus, sleep, weight management, and immune system functioning. At 4 Seasons Acupuncture, we offer B12 injections along with other holistic services to help you manage your stress.

Chinese Herbs - Many Chinese herbs are formulated to help manage stress and energy, and promote balance in the body. Chinese Herbs may be used alone or in conjunction with other stress management practices like acupuncture, Tui Na massage, and/or nutritional support.

Deep Breathing - One of the easiest way you can decrease stress is to simply breathe deep. Taking deep breaths with long, slow exhales actually signals your brain to relax. Make it a point to check in with yourself throughout the day, when you first wake up, during lunch, when you get home from work. Set aside a few minutes each day to focus on your breath, taking deep, diaphragmatic breaths to ease tension and reduce stress no matter where you are.

Eating Healthy - Nutrition is the cornerstone for good health. When it comes to stress, certain nutrients can help support the body and mind. Start your day off with a solid protein-packed breakfast, incorporate fatty fish into your diet throughout the week, choose healthy fats like avocado and grass-fed eggs, and don’t forget your leafy greens. Calm yourself with a warm cup of tea when you feel stressed - mint, passionflower, and barley tea are a few of our relaxing favorites. Also consider supplementing with high quality vitamins, particularly Vitamin D, magnesium, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids as these have all been linked to mood, stress, and overall health.

Fitness - Get moving! Wake up 15 minutes earlier and do a stretch routine before you start your day. Go for a walk during your lunch break. Try a fitness class after work. Exercise releases endorphins, your body’s natural “feel good” chemicals. Exercise is a fantastic way to boost mood naturally, and one of our favorite ways of promoting wellbeing. Boost mood and energy while relieving stress all at the same time.

Get a Massage — a Tui Na massage, that is. Tui Na not only helps relieve pain but also calms the nervous system and promotes healing. Contact us to schedule an appointment for Tui Na at our Winter Park Acupuncture office.

Hydration — Dehydration has been shown to negatively affect mood. Set yourself up for success with the recommended 8 glasses of water a day.
